For the third consecutive year, the highly researched Mediterranean diet won the competition in the 2020 ranking of the best diets of US News and World Report. The report, published on Thursday, is in its tenth year.
“The ‘best’ weight-reduction plan includes balance, maintain, palatability, the circle of relatives friendship, sustainability, and must be healthy. The Mediterranean diet has check marks on all those tables,” said the founding director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, Dr. David Katz, who was one of 25 judges on the US News and World Report panel.
“It is not shocking that the Mediterranean diet remains the best diet in general,” said dietitian Lisa, CNN contributor. “It’s easy to follow and offers a healthy lifestyle.”

Understanding the list
“People should use our rankings and in-depth information to find the diet that works best for them,” Haupt said. “No one can generalize.” She advises people to consider their goals-for example, hoping to look ahead of upcoming events. Yes, I still want to prevent disease.
Main honours
Very carefully to the Mediterranean diet was the DASH, Flexitarian, WW diets (More recently called Weight Watchers) and MIND foods. Their higher levels are a conduit for the results of the annual report.
The DASH diet recommends lowering blood pressure. Its premise is simple: eat more vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products while reducing the consumption of any food high in saturated fat and limiting your salt intake.
Studies have shown that following this diet can reduce blood pressure in a matter of weeks.
The flexitarian diet linked to the DASH diet for second place due to its emphasis on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and plant-based proteins. It is a vegetarian diet that occasionally allows chunks of meat or fish, which makes it “flexible.”
The MIND diet combines Mediterranean and DASH foods; for some may be a little easier to follow since it requires less fish and fruit. MIND, which means “Mediterranean intervention-DASH for neurodegenerative retardation”, and the Mediterranean diet have shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in studies.
WW ranked fourth on the list of the best diets but ranked first in the report ranking of the best commercial weight loss and weight loss programs. The diet is not only healthy, the panel said, but it also earns important points for emphasizing the importance of support for dieters.
WW has gained the respect of nutritionists but lost market share this year. Chief executive of the company told analysts that the loss was due to the popularity of keto diets, which has led to a decline in carbohydrates.
The worst diets in the ranking
It will surely bother his legions of fans, but popular ketogenic diet (also known as ‘zero’ or ‘keto’ diet) reached the last place in the 35-diet ranking, just behind the dark Dukan diet.
Both diets point to “ketosis,” a metabolic state that burns the body’s fat stores instead of carbohydrates, the body’s natural source of energy. Diets restrict carbohydrate intake to levels that nutritionists consider highly unhealthy and ultimately unsustainable.
In the keto diet, Drayer said, “carbohydrates are limited to about 20 grams per day,” the equivalent of a banana or small apple. Due to the drastic reduction of carbohydrates, the diet can cause “headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue, particularly at the beginning,” he said, adding that “long-term studies on their effectiveness are lacking.”
The keto diet is an alternative to carbohydrates, High fat protein, which can support heart and vascular disease and other chronic diseases — high emphasis on high fat and dairy products.
“I am not a keto diet fan, although it may be useful” as a quick start “for weight loss and can help you quickly eliminate your diet of processed carbohydrates and sugars,” Drayer said.
So the ketogenic diet tied for third place in the race for the best diet to lose weight “fast.”
Independent review
WebMD had two registered dietitians without any dietary connections comment on the findings and rankings.
“I’m happy but not surprised,” said Connie Dickman, a registered nutritionist in St. Louis, a food and nutrition consultant, and a former dean of the School of Nutrition and Nutrition. “We all know that a healthy diet is a balanced diet, and this is the highest level you see on the list.”
Los Angeles area registered dietitian nutritionist Jocelyn Harrison said the 2020 list “had not changed much from last year.” She said that what the top diets have in common is that many people also emphasize plant foods like many fruits and vegetables as possible.
